In a concerted effort to strengthen the coconut industry in the province, the Provincial Government of Davao de Oro led by Governor Dorothy Montejo-Gonzaga, through the Provincial Agriculturist Office conducted Ceremonial Turnover of 3,000 Hybrid Coconut Seedlings from the Philippine Coconut Authority Region XI on April 11, 2024, at the Children’s Park Pavilion, Capitol Compound, Nabunturan, Davao de Oro.
Based on the PCA XI Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan (CFIDP), the coconut hybridization initiative is geared towards addressing the shortage of coconut seedlings, increasing coconut production by doubling current yields, and promoting resilient coconut hybrids that can withstand water stress, diseases, and pests.
Governor Gonzaga in her message, expresses her heartfelt gratitude to the PCA Region XI headed by RM Juvy T. Alayon for their unwavering support. She also commends the effort of Dr. Jaime D. Anter, PG-Department of PAGRO for his dedication and commitment to all the coconut farmers. Moreover, she emphasizes the importance of unity and collaboration to the progress of the province in terms of agriculture. “Atua gyung duyogan ug suportahan ang atong pag pang uma sa lubi diri sa atung probinsya sa Davao de Oro”, she added.
During the turnover activity, three different hybrid varieties were distributed initially to the municipalities of Compostela, Monkayo, Nabunturan, Mawab, and Montevista.
The Coconut Hybridization Project serves as a comprehensive support system for the local farmers in Davao de Oro guaranteeing that they have access to high-quality coconut seedlings, as well as the necessary knowledge and resources to maximize their yield. This initiative not only strengthens the coconut industry but also contributes to the overall agricultural development and economic growth of the province. (Photos by J. Cadiz)
