Capacity Building Cum Pico Hydro Power Plant Groundbreaking Ceremony, 2021
NEW BATAAN, DAVAO DE ORO — For basic health and government services to reach the disadvantaged far-flungs—this was Davao de Oro Governor Jayvee Tyron Uy’s promise during his 2020 State of the Province Address, which occurred almost exactly a year from the Cum Pico Hydro Power Plant Groundbreaking Ceremony in Barangay Manurigao, New Bataan last January 26, 2021. Representing the Provincial Local Government Unit (PLGU) of Davao de Oro, the ceremony was led by Vice-Governor Maria Carmen Zamora and Sec. Isidro Lapeña of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) which officially re-kick-started the implementation of the PLGU’s planned interventions for the said barangay after being stalled by the raging COVID-19 pandemic in the past year.
Barangay Manurigao, which also happens to be the farthest barangay in the farthest town of the province, was once an unchartered highland that was feared for the alleged presence of communist insurgents in the area. Five years however of PLGU intervention has now made the place more accessible with help from national government agencies and the private sector. The PLGU continues to reach Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDA) such as Manurigao as Governor Tyron Uy firmly believes, peace can be attained through means of peace.
The Pico Hydro Power Plant project is yet another addition to the infrastructure projects that the PLGU had planned for the far-flung barangay not only to make it more accessible, but also to develop community relations and improve the lives of the people living within its premises; a true mark of the province’s bayanihan and walang-iwanan culture.
Sec. Isidro Lapeña further promised TESDA scholarships to a total of 135 Indigenous Mandaya in the barangay through the Davao National Agricultural School and Regional Training Center-Korea-Philippines Vocational Training Center. With this, natives from Manurigao will gain skills training through TESDA NC courses on PV System Installation, Slaughtering Operations, Masonry, Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Hot Meal Cooking and Preparation, and the Production of Organic Fertilizer. This scholarship project is part of the sustainable plan to help the people make a living and improve their living conditions on their own.
