GOVERNOR’S WEEKLY REPORT || AUGUST 1-5, 2022
August 5, 2022
Davao de Oro Governor Dorothy Montejo-Gonzaga was officially named by the Mansaka Tribe in the province as “Gibubayan Pyasaya Magsibay” during the convocation and flag ceremony in celebration of the Indigenous People’s Month observed during October.
According to the Mansaka Tribe, the new governor’s name, “Pyasaya” means “Pinangga”, while “Magsibay” means “Ikot.” The governor’s tribal name profoundly implies a deep concern for the welfare of her people in the province. It also means roaming around Davao de Oro and rendering genuine public service, reflected in the mantra, “Government Works,” with no stones left unturned.
In response, Gov Gonzaga expressed her warmest gratitude to the tribe for giving her a name that coincides with her governance in the province. The governor reiterated that she was glad for her tribal name; this reflects how she happily wanders around the province and delivers government service even in the farthest communities.
Gov Gonzaga conveyed that despite the abundance and potential of the IP communities, more of them are left out of reaching government programs; thus, the provincial government needs to prioritize them for their welfare.
Gov Gonzaga stated that the province would give more scholarship grants to the IP community. “Atong plastaron ug hapsayon ug taman ang scholarship program. Kinahanglan tinud-anay gyud. Dili pwede ug zero, dapat daghan gyud ug persento sa IPs nga ma-scholar nato.” said Gonzaga. She emphasized the importance of education for the IP community as this would help them step up in modern times, ensure the proper exercise of their rights, and access government programs and services.
Further, Gov Gonzaga also highlighted that the tourist destinations located in the ancestral domains of the province should always pay respect to the IP community.
In the upcoming celebration of the 2022 Bulawan Festival, the provincial government will ensure that the farthest communities can join the province’s festivity. Gov Gonzaga also informed the IP communities that the provincial government will have a series of outreach programs in far-flung communities. “Kinahanglang makatilaw ang atung mga kaigsoonang IPs kung unsa ka bulawanon ug ka-adunahan ang atung probinsya.”Gov Gonzaga added.
